Description
Dimethylaminoethanol, also known as DMAE, is a chemical substance whose topical application was discovered by the American dermatologist Dr. Perricone of Yale University, a specialist in anti-ageing. The application of this molecule in anti-wrinkle and anti-sagging treatments has been a true revolution in the aesthetics market, as it exerts a powerful, long-lasting and almost immediate lifting effect, the so-called “ashen effect”.
DMAE firms, improves the stability of the cell membrane, protects it from free radicals and helps eliminate toxins. It improves the contractility of the skin and makes the muscle tone adequate to exercise any movement, which appears with ageing.
The use of DMAE in dermatology and aesthetics is fairly recent, although it is traditionally administered orally in cases of hyperactivity, depressive disorders, etc. The discovery of its rejuvenating action was accidental, as it was found that one of the side effects observed in patients treated with this molecule was the hypertonicity of the cervical muscle located at the level of the jaw.
Dr. Perricone decided to apply it topically, including it in a facial treatment cream, and obtained positive results: an increase in facial muscle tone was observed, mainly in the neck and eyelid area. Tightening effect of topically applied DMAE DMAE is a small hydrophilic molecule, with a low molecular weight, and can therefore easily penetrate through the skin. Its action is due to the fact that it is a precursor of acetylcholine.
Topical application of DMAE causes a visible tightening and firming effect – the lifting effect – which can be visible within 20-30 minutes of applying the product.
The tightening action continues to improve during the first 6 months after application and remains stable for 4 to 8 weeks after discontinuation of the topical treatment. In addition to the aforementioned effects of DMAE, fragmented hyaluronic acid is added, which is a precursor of fibroblast activity, natural components of the skin that decrease in quantity with ageing.
This causes a decrease in the skin’s capacity for hydration with a loss of elasticity and turgidity. Hyaluronic acid moisturises the skin and triggers a bioactive process stimulating fibroblasts to generate collagen, making the skin more turgid and less rough.
